Emma Weyant, a collegiate swimmer who finished second behind transgender athlete Lia Thomas in a race on March 17, has been hailed as the “true winner” of the competition.
Weyant, a 20-year-old Florida native, swims for the University of Virginia and was a member of Team USA at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where she won silver in the 400-meter Individual Medley.
On Thursday, however, she was defeated by Thomas, a 22-year-old trans athlete who became the first trans athlete to win an NCAA swimming championship.
