John Rowe is the father of Mike Rowe, a well-known television personality whose name has been looked up to by millions of people. On March 18, 1962, Mike Rowe was born to parent John and Peggy Rowe, who were both teachers. Mike stated that the show was an homage to his father and grandfather in the Dirty Jobs advertising.

In 1979, while a member of Troop 16 in Overlea, he finished his Eagle Scout service project by reading to students at the Maryland School for the Blind. He cites this as one of the motivations for his interest in writing and narrating.
