Steve Thomas Lacy-Moya was born on May 23, 1998, in Compton, California, to an African-American mother and a Filipino father. His mother raised him, with his father being generally gone from his life and only visiting on exceptional occasions. Lacy’s father died when he was ten years old. Lacy went to Washington Preparatory High Institution before transferring to a private school. Lacy has stated that he grew up sheltered as a result of his mother’s desire to protect him and his sisters from the surroundings in Compton at the time.
When Lacy was seven years old, she initially became interested in the guitar through the video game Guitar Hero, but she quickly developed a desire to learn how to play an actual guitar. While playing in the high school jazz band, he used the Internet to find his future bandmate, Jameel Bruner. He used an iRig guitar plug-in to create and perform his first tunes on his iPhone. He started working as a producer on the Internet’s third studio album, Ego Death, in 2013.
